The Penlee disaster was the last time Britain’s lifeboat service lost an entire crew in action. Penlee Life Boat Disaster wreckage from the lifeboat is brought ashore Monday 21st December 1981.

Report on the recording made by an amateur radio enthusiast on the night of the Penlee lifeboat disaster (19/12/81), when the Penlee lifeboat went to the aid of the stricken coaster Union Star in heavy seas. After the lifeboat had rescued four people, both vessels were lost with all hands; in all, sixteen people died including eight volunteer lifeboatmen. Although empty, as the modern replacement lifeboat is now stationed at Newlyn, its coxswain the son of one of those lost in 1981, the lifeboat house at Penlee Point stands as a memorial to its brave crew.

Both vessels were lost with all hands, leaving 16 dead, 8 from each vessel.

The Penlee life boat was launched from the Cornish village of Mousehole at exactly 20:12 on Saturday night (19th) after the freighter Union Star sent out distress call.
