The Kermadec Trench and archipelago were set to become New Zealand's largest marine sanctuary. Typical deep-sea experiments of individual animal physiology must deal with covarying factors of pressure, temperature, light and food supply in this study investigated the effects of pressure and increased food supply on overall animal metabolism. Yet the sanctuary remains unratified; subject to a fisheries dispute currently before the courts …

(Photo by Ken Kostel, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution) The Kermadec area is unique and one of the most pristine environments on earth. Our team put down cameras baited with mackerel to attract mobile animals in the trench. The trench lies parallel with the eastern shore of Australia.

Kermadec Trench, submarine trench in the floor of the South Pacific Ocean, about 750 mi (1,200 km) in length, forming the eastern boundary of the Kermadec Ridge.

the Challenger Deep is the deepest point we know of in the oceans. The Kermadec Trench runs northeast from the North Island of New Zealand (shown in red in this illustration) to the Louisville Seamount Chain. WHOI biologist Tim Shank gets an up-close look at animal tracks on the seafloor of the Kermadec Trench 10,000 meters (6.2 miles) beneath the surface during the final dive of the hybrid remotely operated vehicle Nereus. The study tested samples of crustaceans found in the ultra-deep trenches that span the entire Pacific Ocean – the Mariana, Japan, Izu-Bonin, Peru-Chile, New Hebrides and Kermadec trenches. The proposed Kermadecs Ocean Sanctuary stretches over 620,000 square kilometres of sea, pocked with small rocky islands and riddled with underwater volcanoes and deep trenches.

The 40-day expedition to the Kermadec Trench, which begins on April 12, 2014, kicks off a three-year collaborative effort. This point lies at the southern end of the Mariana Trench, the deepest ocean trench in the world. A crustacean on the edge of the Marianas Trench … The Sirena Deep: it’s 10,700 m (6.6 miles) deep and largely unexplored. Major Pacific Ocean trenches (1-10) and fracture zones (11-20); Kermadec Trench is at number one. The Wee Trap had another grabber with mud, and baited traps with animals… It is the second deepest oceanic trench in the world and formed by subduction, a geophysical process in which the Pacific tectonic plate is pushed beneath the Indo-Australian Plate. Life in Hell: Five Bizarre Animals from the Hadal Zone At a whopping 10928 meters (nearly 7 miles!!) Kermadec Trench samples were collected aboard the R/V Thompson from April to May 2014 using HROV Nereus [38], CTD casts, and free-falling/ascending landers (Elevator Lander; [39]). It is also one of the coldest trenches due to Kermadec–Tonga trench boundary where the Trench Chain Collision Zone of the Louisville Seamount Chain occurs.
