This was on a 1940’s era De Havilland Beaver. Afognak Island, part of the Kodiak Archipelago, is located 25 air miles north of the city of Kodiak. This System was expanded in 2004 to include the lands of Natives of Kodiak, Inc. (NOK), and Ouzinkie Native Corporation (ONC), forming the Joint Land Use Permit System. Located north of Kodiak, Afognak Island is remote and relatively wild - a logging camp is its lone settlement. Orcas, gray whales, humpbacks, finbacks and minke whales populate its waters. So I was lucky enough to draw a tag for an elk hunt on the eastern half of afognak DE723. Alaska. About Afognak Island Alaska. Swamplord. Looking for some advice from anyone who has been there and chased elk around. Our lodge is a wilderness vacation retreat on the mountainous and densely forested Afognak Island, one of the Kodiak Islands group. The original plant consisted of eight calves, and the herd has expanded to nearby Raspberry Island. The entire trip was on commercial flights except the flight from Kodiak to our hunting spot on Afognak. For the most part, Afognak Island is pure Alaska wilderness — home to Kodiak brown bear, Sitka black-tailed deer and Roosevelt elk.

I've never hunted elk and have never been to afognak. Elk Bugling/Calling ? Brown bears are common on Afognak Island, but the population size is unknown. My season dates are October 8th - 22nd.
